Shaky control didn't stop Jimenez from turning in an impressive first full season. Given his electric stuff and ability to force ground outs, throwing just a few more strikes could turn him into Colorado's ace. Consider him a solid No. 4 fantasy starter heading into 2009.
News: Rockies SP Ubaldo Jimenez had one of his best starts of 2008 in the season finale Sunday at Arizona, allowing three hits and four walks in seven shutout innings. He also recorded 10 strikeouts in the no decision. It was the latest in a string of fine starts by Jimenez, who allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight outings. "It's been a learning curve," Jimenez said. "It's been a lot of up and down. I learned a lot of things from that. I finished strong, and that's what matters."
Analysis: Jimenez finished with a 12-12 record and just nudged his ERA below 4.00 at 3.99. He has outstanding stuff, as evidenced by his 172 strikeouts in 198 2/3 innings, and only needs to improve his control to emerge as a Fantasy stud. Draft him as a No. 4 or 5 Fantasy SP next season and watch him develop into more
Jimenez ended the season with four quality starts in his last five outings. His 5.4 BB/9 rate in his last four starts highlighted command problems which hindered Jimenez for most of the season. The righty had a 4.67 BB/9 rate on the year.
Ubaldo Jimenez struck out 10 Diamondbacks in seven scoreless innings of work on Sunday but was not involved in the decision of a 2-1 Rockies' loss. The outing lowered Jimenez's ERA to 3.99, but he ends up at just 12-12 despite the impressive season. Jimenez allowing just 11 homers in 198 2/3 innings while pitching half his games at Coors Field is so impressive it's hard to expect a repeat. Still, there's plenty of room for growth here considering that Jimenez walked 103 batters. Jimenez also had the highest average fastball velocity among starting pitchers this year at 94.9 MPH, so the stuff is there to make him an intriguing pick despite Coors Field working against him.
Ubaldo Jimenez struck out 10 hitters in seven shutout innings on Sunday against the Diamondbacks. However, it was not good enough for the win as Arizona came back to win in the bottom of the ninth.Jiminez has won his last four decisions bringing him to 13-12 for 2008. He also got his ERA down to 3.99 with his outing on Sunday. If the 24 year old pitches in 2009 like he did in September 2008, he will be of great fantasy value.
