The Royals are believed to be interested in Mariners' shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, according to the Kansas City Star.The Mariners and Royals previously talked about a Betancourt deal in exchange for Billy Butler before the 2007 season. Betancourt is not as good as he should be defensively, and is only a .282 career hitter. He is worth acquiring, just as long as the Royals don't overpay.

According to the Kansas City Star, the Royals are interested in Yuniesky Betancourt. Last month general manager Dayton Moore talked about the Royals needing to add on-base threats to the lineup, but then he traded for Mike Jacobs (.299 on-base percentage) and is reportedly interested in both Betancourt (.300) and Jeff Francoeur (.294). The newspaper notes that the Royals and Mariners discussed a Betancourt-for-Billy Butler swap back in 2007, but "Seattle rejected the offer." It seems silly that Kansas City would consider swapping a hitter with Butler's potential for an overrated defensive shortstop with a 705 career OPS, but they are the Royals after all.Source: Kansas City Star Related: Billy Butler, Royals

Betancourt developed a smaller strike zone late in the season and became a better hitter, posting a .343 average with 15 RBIs in September. He still needs more work in that area, but it's a good start for a shortstop entering his age-27 season.
