The Mets are considering upgrading at catcher this winter and have reportedly already had internal discussions regarding Bengie Molina. It's likely that the Giants will keep Molina unless offered significantly more than he's worth. The 34-year-old has one year left on his deal and is due $6 million in 2009. Considering that it'd cost the Mets either Jon Niese or Daniel Murphy and more to get him, they'd be better off just sticking with Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro.Source: SI.com Related: Brian Schneider, Mets

Molina defied the conventional wisdom that said his numbers would take a dive with Barry Bonds no longer protecting him in the lineup. Instead, he became one of fantasy's finest catchers, with more RBIs than anyone at his position. The Giants may be tempted to trade him over the next year with Pablo Sandoval waiting in the wings. Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-3 with two homers for Magallanes of the Venezuelan Winter League on Saturday, giving him nine homers for the season.Sandoval will likely start at either first base or third base for the Giants this season, and he goes into the season as a nice sleeper after his strong 2008 between the minors and majors.

GM Brian Sabean stated that he envisions Pablo Sandoval roaming third base in 2009, after he previously stated he would work at first, according to the Mercury News. There is a lot of time between now and spring training, so Sandoval's position could change again. He would rank as a sleeper next season if he ultimately nails down a starting spot, as he batted .345 with 24 RBI over 41 games in 2008.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Giants GM Brian Sabean said this week that he sees Pablo Sandoval playing third base next season. That's a change from the end of the year, when Sabean stated that he had Sandoval penciled in at first base. The Giants are likely to add a regular infielder this winter, and they have plenty of flexibility. If it's a third baseman, Sandoval can move back to first. Rafael Furcal at shortstop might be their dream scenario, and that would involve Emmanuel Burriss moving to second base.Source: San Jose Mercury News Related: Rafael Furcal, Emmanuel Burriss (click again to close) | C

Giants optioned catcher Steve Holm to Triple-A Fresno. Holm has seen limited action since re-joining the Giants in July, but he managed to go 6-for-12. Still, he's not a long-term answer, and the team wants to take a look at Pablo Sandoval. (click again to close) | C

Second base might be Velez's job to lose in 2009 if he could establish himself defensively. But he hasn't been able to do so thus far, which leaves wiggle room for Kevin Frandsen. At the very least, Velez's outstanding speed makes him a good source of steals in NL-only play.

September 30, 2008, 6:00 pm
Eugenio Velez will be in the mix to start at second base next season for the Giants though GM Brian Sabean is "pulling for" Kevin Frandsen who is coming back from injury, according to The Mercury News.Velez hit .262 with 15 steals in 275 AB this season and was particularly hot down the stretch hitting .328 over his last 45 appearances. As for Frandsen, he was in the mix to start at third base this season before injuring his Achilles tendon. Velez has the speed, so it would be best, from a fantasy perspective, if he were to win the job.

2008 draft pick Conor Gillaspie registered his first major league hit against Dan Haren Tuesday and manager Bruce Bochy commented that he may get a start at third base before the end of the season, according to the SF Chronicle. Bochy added, "He's not ready for the major leagues right now, but he's close. He's going to be on a fast pace. When you come up here the year you're drafted, that's probably added pressure on you as a player. You get drafted and dream of making it to the major leagues, and you're here already. I like the way he carries himself. I like the way he's worked."Gillaspie has a bright future with the Giants, but should not be on fantasy rosters in non-keeper leagues with less than two weeks left in the season.
