RedHawks romp into PCL Finals
Vicente Padilla comes off the disabled list and opens up a six-game road trip for the Rangers when he faces the Mariners on Tuesday at Safeco Field. It will be his first start since Aug. 24, when a strained hamstring along with inflammation in a joint between his neck and shoulder sidelined him.
Brandon McCarthy allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings and the Rangers lost to the Red Sox, 7-2, at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Sunday. Texas lost its ninth game in 10 contests against Boston this season.
Milton Bradley can become a free agent this offseason, and even though health issues have kept him from being in the lineup every day, Rangers manager Ron Washington wants him back in 2009.
Offensively, Joaquin Arias is hitting .271 in his first 16 games with seven runs scored and three stolen bases. Manager Ron Washington has been using Arias at the top of the lineup with Ian Kinsler out for the season, but has his doubts about Arias' defense.
The Rangers scored seven runs off pitcher Tim Wakefield in the bottom of the second inning and cruised to a 15-8 victory over the Red Sox at the Ballpark in Arlington on Saturday night, the first time Texas beat Boston in nine games this season.
With Marlon Byrd sidelined because of a sprained left thumb, Frank Catalanotto was back in the Rangers lineup on Saturday night for the first time since Aug. 24. Brandon Boggs would replace Byrd in left field, and manager Ron Washington wanted Catalanotto's experience against Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.
The Rangers were without both Milton Bradley and Marlon Byrd for the start of Saturday's game with the Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Bradley is sidelined with soreness in his left wrist and Byrd is out with a sprained left thumb. Both are listed as day-to-day.
Michael Schlact pitched six strong innings and Chad Tracy homered and drove in four runs as Frisco completed a three-game sweep of San Antonio.
The Rangers have used seven rookie starting pitchers this year. Left-hander Matt Harrison is the last one standing and starts against the Red Sox on Saturday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington -- and he's excited for the challenge.
Kevin Millwood had a three-game winning streak snapped in the Rangers' 8-1 loss to the Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Friday. Millwood allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and one walk while striking four. He is 9-8 with a 5.01 ERA on the season.
Chris Newcomer threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Rangers game against the Red Sox on Friday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Newcomer, a Fort Worth-area resident and local softball player, is recovering from brain cancer and was representing the Rangers as part of their efforts in Major League Baseball's part in the Stand Up To Cancer campaign.
Vicente Padilla, out with a hamstring strain since Aug. 25, said he felt good after throwing a bullpen session Friday. Cleared by coaches, he should start against the Mariners on Tuesday.
Outfielder Marlon Byrd left Friday's game with the Red Sox after just one inning with a sprained left thumb. Byrd injured the thumb trying to make a diving catch on Dustin Pedroia's line-drive double. X-rays taken were negative and Byrd is day-to-day.
Second baseman Ian Kinsler and pitcher Doug Mathis are having surgery and are out for the season. The Rangers though are still holding out fading hope that David Murphy will be able to play again.

Though he's a September callup of the Rangers, rookie backstop Taylor Teagarden is bringing a breadth of high-level experience with him to Arlington.
Few teams are as flush in minor league talent as the Rangers are today. Jamey Newberg takes a look at the Rangers' Top 20 prospects.
While the Rangers' Hank Blalock battled injuries early this year, Chris Davis ascended from Double-A to the Major Leagues, and both switched positions. Davis is at third base for Texas, replacing Blalock, who has moved to first.
Right-hander Dustin Nippert allowed seven hits in seven shutout innings, as the Rangers captured their three-game series against the Mariners with a 1-0 win Wednesday afternoon. Milton Bradley hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the only run.
The return of Rangers outfielder David Murphy from a sprained right knee is not imminent. Murphy pushed himself last Wednesday, but had swelling in the knee as a result. He will go on the next road trip but has no idea when he will play again.
Right-hander Dustin Nippert will start in the series finale Wednesday against the visiting Mariners, going in place of Vicente Padilla, who is sidelined with a strained left hamstring muscle. Nippert will be making his third start this season.
Rangers pitcher Kevin Millwood has been nominated is the Rangers' 2008 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Chevrolet. Millwood is involved in several causes in the area, including helping to build Habitat for Humanity homes.
Right-hander Brandon McCarthy, trying to nail down a spot in next year's rotation, allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, as the Rangers beat the Mariners, 6-4, on Tuesday night. Josh Hamilton had three hits and drove in three runs.
