Chavez underwent three surgeries late in 2007 and spent much of this season on the disabled list before season-ending shoulder surgery in August. He's the team's highest-paid player by a mile, due to make $11 million next season, and there's been talk of him moving to first base or DH. If he does, prospect Jeff Baisley, who spent most of the year at Triple-A Sacramento before a strong showing as a September callup, has the upper hand on Jack Hannahan. General manager Billy Beane said he's optimistic about Chavez being able to man the hot corner in 2009, but recent history suggests otherwise.
