Luis Gonzalez : October 14th, 2008, 8:35 pm est
While he hasn't completely ruled out retirement, free-agent-to-be Luis Gonzalez is likely to play another season in 2009. The 41-year-old Gonzalez hit .261/.336/.413 in 341 at-bats for the Marlins this season. It sounds like he'd like a larger role next year. "If I do come back, it will be my 19th season in the major leagues," he said. "It just depends on the situation. I could end up in the American League, and I'd be perfect for the DH. Obviously, I'm not going to hit as many home runs as I used to, but I think my extra-base-hit numbers will be there. I hit 26 doubles not playing every day. If you get 400-500 at-bats, I could very easily have been in the mid-30s or low 40s." For the record, Gonzalez's OPS has declined five straight years and been under 800 three years in a row. No team is going to sign him with the intention of making him a regular DH.Source: Marlins.mlb.com
