Cardinals OF Ryan Ludwick made Astros SP Brandon Backe pay for walking two batters in the fifth inning Sunday. Backe retired the leadoff hitter Skip Schumaker before allowing one-out walks to Rick Ankiel and Albert Pujols. Ludwick then dumped a 0-2 pitch into right center that scored both runners and allowed St. Louis to take a 2-1 lead. They would not look back and win 5-1.
