According to the New York Daily News, the Mets have interest in free agent pitcher Jon Garland. The Mets might be moving on from the idea of signing of Derek Lowe, looking to cheaper options instead. Garland posted a 4.90 ERA last season and opposing batters hit .303 off the 29-year-old, but one scout believes he would fair better in the National League. The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers SP Chad Billingsley (leg) underwent surgery to correct a spiral fracture of the fibula in his left leg sustained when he slipped on ice outside of his home. He had a plate put in during the procedure and will be in a cast for two weeks. An early prognosis dictates Billingsley will be ready to throw when spring training begins.

Josh Donaldson went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBI as the Phoenix Desert Dogs beat Mesa 10-4 on Saturday to win a fifth straight AFL championship. The Solar Sox were the clear favorites in this one with Tommy Hanson on the mound, but after Hanson was removed with a 3-1 lead, the Desert Dogs scored nine runs in the sixth and seventh. The five straight wins for the Desert Dogs is truly remarkable, given that there's a near 100 percent personnel turnaround every year. Luck of the draw played a key role this year, as the team won it's division with an 18-18 record. The Solar Sox and Javelinas both went 26-12 in the other division. Donaldson, who batted .288 with four homers in 104 regular-season at-bats, hit the only homer for Mesa. Jeff Larish had one for Phoenix. Twins prospect Jeff Manship started for Phoenix and allowed three runs -- two earned -- in five innings. A's prospects Andrew Bailey and Andrew Carginan closed it out with three scoreless innings between them.

Chad Billingsley had surgery to repair a broken leg on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. He slipped on ice outside of his home in Pennsylvania and it resulted in a spiral fracture.Billingsley will be in a cast for about two weeks and the injury doesn't appear that it will affect him for the 2009 season of spring training.

If A.J. Burnett is to get his wish of a five-year deal, he may have to re-sign with Toronto, according to the Sporting News. The Yankees and Red Sox both appear to be anxious about giving the injury-prone Burnett a five-year contract.Burnett pitched well in Toronto last year, so staying there for a fifth year wouldn't be the end of the world for him. The pressure of pitching in New York or Boston might not be worth an extra million or two when it could mean fewer years on likely the last major contract that Burnett will sign.

Blalock's shoulder problems over the past two seasons have left him without the necessary arm strength to play third. Chris Davis manned the hot corner in 2008, but the club feels he's better suited for first. Travis Metcalf is the Rangers best inhouse candidate but he missed two months this past season because of a torn hamstring muscle. The Rangers don't appear to have the money to spend on the top free agent third basemen: Casey Blake and Joe Crede. That is, unless their asking price falls. Otherwise, a trade might be in the works.

After eight years in the organization, a fresh start certainly seems necessary for the 6-foot-4, former Kent State standout who never reached organizational expectations. Reconstructive shoulder injuries on both shoulders cost Van Benschoten nearly two full seasons, and once he returned for a full season in 2007, parlaying Van Benschoten's dominant Minor League results into Major League success became a mystery.

The Dodgers probably won't even duplicate the three-year, $39 million deal that landed Furcal three years ago. From that contract, the club got one healthy year from Furcal, another when he tried to play through a year-long ankle injury, and this past year, when the 31-year-old played one month and missed five with a bad back that needed surgery. With shortstops Angel Berroa, Chin-lung Hu and Ivan DeJesus Jr. in the system, the money not spent on Furcal could be redirected toward an upgrade at another position, perhaps to keep veteran Casey Blake at third base.
